Excerpt: Jack Penny and Dr. Liza Charles
“Mr. Penny, the parking lot is scary at night. I keep the mace on hand for protection. Plus, you were very angry with me today.” She watched him limp to the door.
“I know. I was wrong, and you had every right to spray me. I’ll see you in two weeks, doc.”
“What? You still want me to be your doctor?”
He smiled. “Hey, you’ve already blinded me; I can’t wait to see how you top that at the next appointment.”
Liza’s heart melted. “I promise I won’t hurt you. Thank you for being so understanding, Mr. Penny.”
“Call me Jack. Goodnight, Dr. Charles,” he said, closing the door behind him.
She’d started to clean up the mess in the exam room when the door opened again. It startled her to see Jack standing there. “Did you forget something?”
“I came to walk you to your car. If you haven’t noticed, it’s dark outside.”
“You don’t have to do that; I’ll call the security guard.”
Jack chuckled. “Yeah, like I trust that guy.”
Liza felt she couldn’t deny his request after what she’d done. “I’ll be a few minutes. I have to clean up first.” She watched him grab the garbage pail by the door. “What are you doing?”
Jack turned toward her, and Liza felt her heart catch in her throat. He was definitely more attractive than she’d first thought, especially with his piercing blue eyes with little specks of gold in them.
In one swoop, his large hand cleared the clutter off the counter. “I’m helping you clean.”
She laughed. He had tossed everything in the trash, including the towels. “That’ll do it. I’ll get my coat. Thanks again, Jack.”
